Algeria was a major maritime force for three centuries. Indeed, numerous European nations hastened to befriend them and reach an agreement with them. These countries also recognized that the removal of this force was critical to the success of any colonial expansion initiative along the Mediterranean's southern shores. The Algerian subject was a major topic of debate during the European League conferences in Vienna in 1815 and Aix-La Chapelle in 1818. France used Algeria's economic and military downfall, particularly after the Battle of Navarino in 1827, to declare a siege on the Algerian coast in preparation for its invasion in 1830.
