A general view of algiers

The existence of Algiers dates back to ancient times,  the current city  was founded on the ruins of a Phoenician commercial station dating back  to the 6th century BC , it  was known back then as Icosuium Phoenicians chose this site to establish it because of  its immunity and the easiness to anchor their commercial ships ,  during the roman occupation of north Africa it became a roman colony in the beginning of the 5th century  AD it  witnessed the passage of the Gaiseric army of the vandal king on his way to rescue the roman leader Bonifacius . The city kept its name until the time of Islamic small kingdoms,  in   the second half of the 4th century AD when Bulukīn ibn Zīrī ibn Manād urbanized it  and the city became known as Algiers beni mzghna . A very beautiful city, its geographic area expended, its growth started to increase, its trade prospered, its economy  recovered, and the urbanization  increase

This is what made it  the focus of many state’s greediness , it was governed by the Morabit dynasty ,AlMohad empire, the Hammadid dynasty  and Ziyanide empire and lastly the tribe of thaalba took it over and inhabited it.

Spaniards invaded the African coasts , occupied the city of algiers and established the fortress of al benon  on one of the islands opposite to it . The spanish pressure resulted  on algiers’  inhabitant seeking  for help from  the brothers kheirdine and Arouj  Barbarossa to get rid of the spanish danger facing the city , this was the reason for the residents of the city to ask to join the ottoman empire ,then the city became a  capital named Algiers of the west and was known as the invincible guarded city el mahroussa, until  it got occupied during the french campaign .
